About: Longlegs Movie (2024) Review: Is Longlegs a Good Movie?
Osgood Perkins has developed his directing abilities in his earlier pictures and employed his own special inner alchemy to seize and hold onto the audience. Upon my second viewing, I was able to discern so much more of the film’s subtle and intricate undertones, whereas my first viewing left me overcome with a wave of horror. I started crying when I looked down the barrel of Osgood Perkins’s immensely gifted performance and into Nicolas Cage’s eyes as Longlegs.
Few performers can pull off an appearance like that of Cage, who is nearly unrecognizable as the mysterious and devilish Longlegs.
The persona makes fleeting appearances in sequences that have a psychedelic or dreamy quality that plays on the viewer’s imagination, intensifying the already nearly unbearable levels of intensity. Even still, this unsettling being exudes a childish atmosphere, which makes it all the more terrifying. Once again, Nicolas Cage has elevated the standard for all actors.
I find myself in a bit of an odd situation reviewing LONGLEGS at this specific time. One of 2024’s best horror movies is the latest work by writer/director Osgood Perkins, a masterful experiment in a wonderfully unsettling atmosphere. However, I think some of the prior reviews have oversold it, referring to it as the scariest movie of the decade, a film that will leave you sick with fear, etc.
Carter is enlisting Harker and her recently developed skills to help with the investigation because he believes that this “Longlegs” is influencing the murderers from a distance. He claims that after giving them instructions, “they do it to themselves and to each other.” The letters from Longlegs are meant to look like ones from the Zodiac Killer, and the agents mention Charles Manson while talking about his tactics. The film’s unsettling power stems from its ability to blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy by weaving these actual atrocities into a work of occult fiction.
